FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions English (Click here for the German FAQ)

What is eduka’s mission?

eduka is a nonprofit education initiative and has created convenient and cost-efficient language programs for kindergartens and parents since 2015. The goal: to integrate English easily and naturally into the everyday lives of children. Simple, flexible, cost-efficient and available in more than 70 cities. eduka is the Germany’s only external provider for an immersive language learning concept in the kindergarten. Our native language assistants who come from various English-speaking countries in the world are the heart and the prestige of our concept.

What programs do you offer?

English Friday: One day a week – the English Friday – children are cared for in English by native speaking language assistants directly in their playgroup for 4 hours. With no extra effort for travelling to an English class and integrated into the regular, everyday kindergarten flow, this is the way kids learn the most natural. See more.

Voluntary Service: We place young people from English speaking countries in German kindergartens/daycare centers to bring their native language and individual culture with them. They work daily in the kindergarten and talk with the children exclusively in English. We organize the exchange with foreign authorities and take care of training, organizational and local support. See more.

English Babysitting: Our native-speaking babysitters come directly to your home and take care of your child(ren) while communicating only in English. Our babysitters are experienced in working with children and a reliable help in everyday life. The babysitters will help with several duties, for example: play and interact with the child, cooking / preparing meals, driving service / pick-up of the children from the day care center. See more.

English Tuition: We provide the most natural and most authentic form of English tuition. Our native speakers come directly to your home and help with your child’s/children’s homework, exam preparation or work off knowledge gaps – also possible in other subjects (such as mathematics)! See more.

Training and Consulting: Every kindergarten is different, thus we are happy to propose individual offers to overcome obstacles with bilingual care. Our training and consulting is targeted specifically at solving challenges of kindergartens/daycares that are already working bilingually or want to integrate a new language. For example, we offer training for educators to enable them to securely communicate in English with other English-speaking kindergarten teaches, parents or children. See more.

What is “immersion”?

Immersion means “language bath”. In that sense, children are immersed in the new language. First, the new language is perceived as colloquial and working language, even if the children are not aware of it in the beginning. They open up the new language even out of context, and learn at their own pace. Immersion follows the principles of psycholinguistics. In this exact way, a child learns its mother tongue.

How does immersion work?

Much like in a bilingual family, one kindergarten teacher speaks German, while our language assistant only speaks English in the group. This approach is called ‚one person, one language‘. The children are immersed in the new language by interacting playfully with native speakers. They open up the new language from the context in which it is needed, and at their own pace.

Why should children learn early a second language?

Beyond the development of intercultural and cognitive skills, a second language such as English is the foundation for future career success in a globalized world. More information here and here.

Are children overwhelmed with a second language?

No, because the optimal phase for language acquisition is when children are three to five years old. Children approach the new language playfully and are open to learn it. However, it is important to learn the language in a playful way and not to „force“ it through rigid vocabulary lessons or grammar studying. More can be found here.

How much do you charge for English in the kindergarten?

The four-hour English Friday costs 76€. If you book several days of the English Friday program per week or implement it in different groups and kindergartens, we can make you an individual offer.

We offer each kindergarten/daycare a two-month test phase, so that children, parents and educators can convince themselves from our concept. During this period, we pay for the cost of the language assistants. Following this, the program can be continued: We recommend a weekly donation of 8€ per child or the kindergarten / carrier pays the costs.

Is it conducive to send my child to an English course?

External English courses consist usually only of one class of 40 minutes per week and are significantly less effective than our English Friday program in kindergartens. For optimum learning progress, children need intensive contact in a natural, authentic environment. External course are not a natural environment for language learning, as the new language is perceived as a „game language“ by the children. In addition, a lesson at Helen Doron, Mortimer or abracadabra Spielsprachchule costs around 45€. Our care is at least five times as long – and cheaper!

Does eduka provide care in other languages (other than English)?

We consider any foreign language in kindergarten a great asset and do not discriminate against any language. Nevertheless, we intentionally focus exclusively on English: Only for English, a continuous transition is guaranteed after kindergarten. Although learning Chinese / French / Turkish in kindergarten would be interesting and useful – the effect would fizzle, when the language is not available in the primary school. In addition, the majority of parents wishes for English education. Children already have a closeness to English, which is omnipresent in everyday life in Germany.

How fast can children learn English?

That depends on the individual child. Usually a child can completely master its kindergarten routine in English after a few months.

Children will learn English in school anyway - why do they need learn English in the kindergarten already?

Sooner or later, every German child will (have to) learn English: However, in the kindergarten and mediated by our native language there is no pressure to learn English. The first contact with the language is therefore playful and not packaged as „teaching“. Children from bilingual kindergartens/daycares  are able to learn English easier at school later on. Also English in the kindergarten increases the chance to speak without an accent! Read more here.

Which kindergartens do offer English care with eduka?
